Friday Fives: Lovely Links!

Today’s letter on the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge is “L” so I will post five cool and/or informative Links I’ve come across recently. And in case you didn’t know, the cute potato-head guy pictured above is Linx, a Sontaran from one of my all-time favorite Doctor Who stories The Time Warror, first broadcast in 1974.

  • Literary agent Rachelle Gardner gave some excellent advice about taxes in this post from a few weeks ago
  • Literary agent Lauren Ruth shared some interesting thoughts about author business cards–should writers carry them, and if so, how should they use them?
  • Litfy is an online library service. It offers ebook versions of classics for free and plans to launch a subscription service ($9.90/month) whereby you have access to the entire Litfy catalog, including copyrighted books (they are working with authors and publishers to make this happen–nothing illegal!). Apps for iPad and iPhone are in the works.
  • Among the cool blogs I’ve visited so far on the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge, this one has had me coming back day after day. Kimberly, the writer, has chosen “alliteration” as her theme, and challenges herself and her commenters to come up with an alliterative sentence using the letter of the day. At the end of the challenge, she is going to award two $25 Amazon gift cards to the longest, most creative, most entertaining, or most clever commenters. We’re only on “L” so there’s plenty of time to join in the fun!
  • Finally, if you didn’t already know, J. K. Rowling’s new website has launched, and along with that comes details about her new novel for adults. It will be called THE CASUAL VACANCY, and will be published on September 27th. Click here for JKR’s new site, and here to jump to the book announcement.

Have a great Friday!

Thanks for sharing these links, Colin. I added both agents to my RSS feed reader (love that thing!). I find the agent blogs to be most helpful. All of the little tidbits they share–whether grievances or great advice–are invaluable. Some of what they post is stuff that I had never in a million years thought of before, but is good to know.

    Thanks again! 🙂

You are very welcome, Jaime! At this stage in my writing journey, I’ve probably learned more from agents than anyone else–fellow writers coming in a close second. 🙂 Any aspiring author not following at least a handful of agent blogs is really missing out on invaluable wisdom.

Lovely use of the “L” for A-Z Bloggers! I too have a writing business card for use at conferences that is used sparingly but has a photo. Great idea to put the “pitch” on the back. I will check out Litfy later but wanted to thank you for stopping by AND let you know that some libraries are starting to offer e-books! The technology will continue to morph rapidly. Write on!

Thanks, Beth! I thought that was a great idea about business cards at conferences too. Lauren actually posted a follow-up article today about business cards–I don’t know if you saw that. Not something I’d really thought much about before.

  4. Great links, Colin – thanks for sharing! So glad I haven’t spent the money to make those business cards, yet…
And yes, completely excited for THE CASUAL VACANCY to come out – I’ll definitely be reading that one!

  5. Ruth says:

Great links. I will definitely share litfy with my daughter. She wants to read all the classics.
