TTT: My Summer Reading List

This week’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, is a “Freebie,” so I’m going to go back to a topic I skipped a few weeks ago because it was Blog Birthday Week. Back on June 19th, TB&TB asked for the Top Ten Books On My Summer TBR List. I confess that, since we’re already a few weeks into summer, I’ve already started on this list. But here it is anyway (click on the covers to go to the Goodreads page for each):

ACROSS THE UNIVERSE by Beth Revis
I’ve had my eye on this book for a while, ever since it was recommended on a YA Highway Road Trip Wednesday some months ago. Further piquing my interest is the fact that the book is a YA sci-fi/dystopian novel written by a fellow North Carolinian.
THE GREAT GATSBY by F. Scott Fitzgerald
One of those books I have to read because… it’s the done thing!
THE PRINCESS BRIDE by William Goldman
Again, it’s one of those books I just have to read.
THE STAND by Stephen King
It’s supposed to be his best, so that intrigues me. The edition I have is the “complete and uncut” 1,152 page edition. Eeek!
A GAME OF THRONES by George R. R. Martin
Because I want to know what all the fuss is about.
ERAGON by Christopher Paolini
My FirstBorn told me I need to read it. She’s a big fan of the series. I’ve told her she needs to read the DIVERGENT series and the LEVIATHAN series, so I suppose it’s only fair…
ENDER’S GAME by Orson Scott Card
Another book I ought to have read.
FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH by Stephanie Jaye Evans
I like a good mystery, and this looks like a good mystery!
LOOKING FOR ALASKA by John Green
John Green’s first novel. Anyone writing YA needs to read, and even study John Green, especially for his mastery of the YA voice. His stories make for compelling–sometimes uncomfortable–reading. I’m not expecting this to be a “light” read, but it will be worthwhile, I’m sure.
RED SKY, RED DRAGONFLY by John Galligan
Benjamin LeRoy of Tyrus Books was offering to buy e-copies of select Tyrus titles for his Twitter followers, and I took him up on the offer. I wasn’t sure which to choose, so he recommended this to me. Thanks Benjamin!

I hope this is not exhaustive of my summer reading, though if I do as much writing as I need to, it might be! There are lots of other books I need to get to. Any recommendations?

  1. I need to read The Great Gatsby and Ender’s Game for the same reason as you… I just haven’t managed to do it yet. Happy reading!
    Here’s my TTT 🙂

I need to read the Great Gatsby and Game of Thrones, too! I tried reading Eragon a long time ago but couldn’t get into it… it may be time to give it another try.

Both my daughter and my wife enjoy the Eragon series. I’ll give it a try–I can at least do that much. 🙂 GAME OF THRONES looks a little intimidating, partly because it’s fantasy–a genre I’m not well-read in, it’s George R R Martin–an author I’ve not read before, and it’s long. THE STAND is longer, but I’m on somewhat familiar territory with Stephen King, so I’m not nearly as intimidated. But none of these books are moving from my desk until I’ve read them! 🙂

  3. Ugh, The Great Gatsby. I think I’m one of the few who couldn’t stand that book. However, I completely recommend Across the Universe (have you seen the new covers?!?!) and Looking for Alaska!

    • cds says:

I HAVE seen the new covers for ACROSS THE UNIVERSE–and I’m a little put out! You see, I bought the “old” paperback edition (the one in the picture) last Saturday, right before they announced the new cover series. Now, if I want to get the rest of the series, my covers will be mis-matched! 🙁 When publishers do this, they should offer some kind of trade-in so you can have a matching set. 🙂

I loved the first series of Game of Thrones. But I couldn’t really get into the novel. It’s quite slow paced and there are a ton of narrators that I kept having to flick back and remind myself who’s POV it was. But I want to give it another go. Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it!

    • cds says:

Since the book is, what, 800 pages(?) long, and it’s the first of a four, five, six(?)-part series, I imagine there’s a lot of world-building and set up in the first book. If I’m right, that might make the whole series a harder sell, but we’ll see. You can certainly count on there being a review, either here or on Goodreads. 🙂 Thanks for the warning about the multiple POVs, Robin. I’ll keep that it mind when I read it.

  5. Hey, I choose the same subject! Across the Universe, thanks for reminding me. I’ll put that one on my Goodreads list as well ^^

Hey, Mel! Well, what can I say? Great minds think alike, clearly! 😀 I’ll be sure to check out your list. Thanks for stopping by. 🙂

What an excellent list! I’m so excited for you because you’re reading so many amazing books this summer! I can’t wait to read your reviews of these – especially GATSBY and PRINCESS BRIDE because they’re two of my favorites. I’ll also be anxiously anticipating THRONES because I want to know what the fuss is about, too!

    • Daisy Carter says:

Also, I’ve started SHATTER ME, that you recommended. So far, so great!

      • cds says:

Thanks, Daisy–and I’m excited that you’re excited for my reviews! Hopefully my reviews are getting better, as in more informative and helpful, the more I do them. I don’t think I’m the best book reviewer by a long shot. But I know how useful a good review can be when you’re on a limited book budget, and that kind of assistance is what I aim for.

I’m glad you’re enjoying SHATTER ME. Tahereh’s a first-rate writer; I’m looking forward to the rest of the series. 🙂

        • Daisy Carter says:

Oh, I didn’t even realize it was the first in a series! That’s great news. She is a great writer, you’re right.

And I thin your book reviews are pretty amazing as is. Keep it up!

  7. Ooh, great list. I had a few false starts with Eragon, and then I read the first three books all back to back and loved them. That was before the fourth book had come out, though, and it took a big chunk of time, so I’m putting off book four for a while because I know I need to re-read books 1-3. I’ll get there, though–it was a really fantastic series.

    • cds says:

Thanks for the vote of confidence with ERAGON, Mrs. S.! My wife is reading the fourth book at the moment. She’s been meaning to for a while, but has only recently found the time.

  8. The Great Gatsby is AMAZING! I hope you enjoy it when you get to it – it was so much better than I expected. I am really looking forward to the film – excited to see what Baz Lurhmann has done with the story.

    • cds says:

Hello, Milka! Thanks for encouraging me to read THE GREAT GATSBY. I know I ought to read it, and comments like this help me look forward to it. 🙂

  9. Kris Atkins says:

I started to read The Princess Bride but just don’t have the time. Sadly, because I LOVE the narrator’s voice. I also love the movie. I’ll definitely have to read it at some point in my life.
Hope you enjoy Ender’s Game! Because if you don’t, you’re probably dead. 😉

    • cds says:

LOL! I hope I enjoy ENDER’S GAME too. There’s a good chance I will. So far, I’ve done pretty well with books that have been recommended–I’ve enjoyed them all. 🙂
