RTW: Wanna-be Sports Novels

Oh, nooo… not another challenging Road Trip Wednesday!! Every week, the YA Highway team pose a question or a challenge to their readers which we then respond to on our blogs. We can then link our blogs on the YA Highway RTW post comments. It’s fun, and most of the time I can participate without having to stretch the grey matter too much. But last week’s was hard for me, and now this week, the challenge is:

In honor of the end of the Olympics, share your favorite sports book

I can’t think of any novels I’ve read and enjoyed that have been sports-based. There might be one or two, but the fact I can’t recall what they were demonstrates that they had little impact on me. So, once again, I’ll have to be creative. Thankfully, my wife, the real creative genius of the family, is firing on all cylinders and has come up with an excellent way to answer the challenge: Books whose titles might have been sports-related. For example:

Now it’s your turn to join in the fun! Can you think of any non-sports novels whose titles lend themselves perfectly to a sporting theme? Offer your thoughts in the comments! And if you have any real sports novels you want to share, you can use the comments here, or share at YA Highway

  1. Colin, this is great. I’m cracking up! I had the same reaction. “Uh… sports books?” Haha. Nice take.

Thanks, Julie! The “artwork” is mine, and I take credit for THE RUNNING MAN, but everything else was wifey’s idea. So yay to wifey! πŸ˜€

  2. Haha, fun answer. I had a hard time coming up with a sports book as well. BTW, I LOVE ‘The Running Man’ — great story. I guess that counts as a sport, right?

  3. Hahaa, nice. I honestly think I would enjoy your version of The Catcher In The Rye better!

    • cds says:

Thanks, Samantha! I haven’t actually read THE CATCHER IN THE RYE–yet, so I can’t comment. But if making it sports-themed improves it, that doesn’t bode well… πŸ˜‰

  4. Clever answer! πŸ™‚

  5. Julie Dao says:

    HAHAHAH!!! Love this!

I was toying with another idea when wifey suggested it. I immediately dismissed whatever I was thinking of–this is such a great take on the topic! πŸ™‚

  6. Samantha says:

Hahah! Your answers are so great!

Love it! But I still think I’d enjoy the originals more;)

You should try Cris Crutcher (esp Whale Talk or Deadline)…sports-themed books even us non- sports fans can appreciate.

    • cds says:

Thanks for the recommendations, Jennifer. I can’t say I’d be excited to read a sports-themed book, but I’ll certainly keep Cris Crutcher in mind.

  8. Rachael says:

Nice one! I had a lot of trouble with this one too. I’m trying to think of some, but the only thing that keeps popping up is how “To Kill a Mockingbird” kind of sounds like a hunting book.

    • cds says:

Oh, I can see it now! TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD–a picture of a hunter aiming his rifle to the sky! Excellent idea! πŸ˜€

  9. Alison Miller says:

    Lord of the Rings! Clever!

    • cds says:

I almost added a picture of Michael Phelps (which would have made me look really clever since that’s topical), but it was too much trouble. πŸ™‚ He should certainly consider that as a title for his autobiography–or perhaps for a biography. Calling oneself “Lord of the Rings”–even if you have the medals to prove it–does come off a little bit egotistical. πŸ™‚

  10. Claire says:

Really like what you’ve done with this one. I am not picturing “Gone with the Wind” with Scarlett running a marathon. Maybe she even makes it to the Olympics and wins gold in the end.

  11. Juliana Haygert says:

HAHAHA, Colin! I love how creative you and your wife are! Awesome!

  12. Melanie says:

I could only think of one- Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally. But I did want to include Harry Potter and The hunger Games. (I didn’t).

  13. Jaime says:

Hahaha! Good on, Colin! πŸ˜€ This was a really creative idea of a really tough RTW topic. I’m still not sure if I’ll be contributing this week. Today’s kind of busy, so we’ll have to see. Thanks for the laugh!

    • cds says:

Thanks, Jaime (though all credit goes to wifey). I’m glad you did end up contributing–your suggestion was really fun (and I loved your picture captions). πŸ™‚

  14. Robin Moran says:

Haha, nice one! Fantastic idea, Colin. I think this has been the hardest RTW yet so well done for coming up with something very creative (as always!) =D

    • cds says:

Thanks, Robin. I’m glad I consulted with wifey. My initial idea was not nearly as good–in fact, I don’t even remember what it was! πŸ™‚
