Nano Maybe…?

It’s October which means NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month, for those that don’t know) is right around the corner. Next month to be precise. The past few years I’ve thought momentarily about participating, but for various reasons decided I didn’t have the time. Last year, my brothers were visiting for a good portion of November, so I knew I wouldn’t get much NoWri done that Mo. This year, however, I have a pretty clear calendar for November (aside from work, Thanksgiving, a couple of birthdays–nothing unusual), so I am giving it serious thought. Also, I freely admit that reading andΒ really enjoying CINDER (I’m talking hot contender for Book of the Year right now), and finding out that Marissa Meyer wrote the first draft as a NaNoWriMo project (and wrote 150,000 words!), encourages me to think seriously about participating. Not that I’ll write anything close to the quality of CINDER, but I’m encouraged by the thought that such awesomeness is possible.

My initial idea for this year was to cheat a little. I have a WIP that I’ve started, but needs a lot more work. The idea I had was to use NaNoWriMo to finish it, or at least make significant progress on it. My plan was to write at least 50,000 new words, picking up from where I last left off. So it wouldn’t be a complete cheat, but perhaps bending the rules a little.

But then I had another thought: why not just start over? While I like what I have already, it’s by no means the best. In its current form, I doubt it would survive the editing process. This way, I get a second chance to make it closer to what I want. And if I get to November 30th with 50,000 words written, I’ll be really happy. I’ve been chewing on this WIP for over a year now (as you know if you’re a regular to this blog), and I’m anxious to write, edit, CP-review (I’m in the market for CPs, btw–more on that later), and query it. Also, I have other projects waiting patiently in the wings that need my attention.

So right now, I am strongly considering NaNoWriMo-ing this year. My blog hasn’t been the most active (RTW, Sunday Devotional, Sunday School Notes… I know, predicable… *yawwwn*), and if I do NaNo, that might not change much. Though I’d probably post some updates, which might make things a little more interesting on the blog (yay!).

If you want to know about the story I would be working on for NaNoWriMo, check out the WIP tab. Feel free to use the comments to let me know if you plan to NaNoWriMo this year, or to cheer me on, offer advice, warnings, etc.

On a different note, I meant to say something on Wednesday but forgot: last Wednesday’s Road Trip Wednesday was my 400th blog post. Just for those that like to know that kind of thing. Like me.

    Wow, 400 posts! Impressive!

My plan is to do NaNoWriMo just to really build the habit of getting my butt in the seat and fingers on keys every day. I’m not sure yet what I’ll be working on, but for me the act of writing is more important right now than the particular project.

Thanks, Jessica! And I was concerned I wouldn’t have enough to say to sustain a blog! πŸ˜€

I have to agree with you about getting into the discipline of writing. Yes, reading and researching helps, but it has to result in something. All the best to you! πŸ™‚

I took part in NaNo last year and ended up kind of tanking. BUT, I don’t consider it a failure because I’ve been working on that NaNo MS again for the past couple of months. I’m thinking that this year’s NaNo might be a great opportunity to finish what I started last year. I think it’s a great way to find motivation and build up momentum, especially knowing that there are others doing the same thing. You should totally give it a go! At the very least you know that there are people like us cheering you on (and giving you the gears for slacking, if you wish). πŸ™‚

Also, WOW about the 400 posts! I’ll be hitting 200 in a day or so, so I’m pretty impressed. πŸ™‚

      Thanks for the encouragement, Jaime.

I really need to create a proper outline for this novel. I’ve been working off of some jotted ideas and vague notions of what I want to happen, but if I’m seriously considering NaNoWriMo-ing this thing, I need to take time to think the whole novel through end to end. I’m not a very good pantser, so if I want to stand any chance of getting to 50,000 words, I don’t need to be hoping I’ll have some cool idea on day 20. I might, and that may change the whole direction of the novel–but I don’t want to be left with nothing if I go grabbing for bright sparkly ideas on day 20 and they’ve all been used up. πŸ™‚

  3. I participated of NaNo last year, and this year I’ll probably be a rebel: I’ll write the last 50k words of a ms I plan to start this week yet. And if I end the wip before hitting 50k for the month, I’ll start another lol
Congrats on 400 posts! I think my blog has around 250 posts so far.

As I said, I thought about bending the rules a little for my first NaNo… but I really don’t think I need to. I can quite happily start this novel over. And besides, for my first time it would be nice to do it properly.

I like your ambition, Juliana! I don’t think you have to worry about cheating. NaNoWriMo is supposed to encourage us to write and finish a novel. If you might be starting a second one for NaNo, then you hardly need the encouragement! But all the best to you anyway. πŸ™‚

I’m not really keeping tally on the number of posts–WordPress does that for me, and I just happened to notice. It came as a bit of a shock. I don’t know why–I do tend to be a little… um… verbose! πŸ™‚

Sounds like a good plan to me. You’ve got the free time, the story idea, and most importantly the will to see it through. And even if it all goes wrong, you’ll still have given the WIP a hefty fill of new words. πŸ™‚

I’m not doing NaNoWriMo. My current first draft needs to go at its own pace, so I’m kind of taking it at a relaxed trot (aiming for 3 months to completion, but my average for first drafts is six). I might try and siphon off some of November’s writing energy to help get it motoring along though.

Thanks, Emma! I think the discipline of NaNo will help me with this WIP. I know me, and once I’ve signed up, I’ll feel bad if I don’t give it my best shot. And even if I end up with 50,000 words of steaming poop, it’s more than I have at the moment. I can work with poop. I can’t work with nothing! πŸ™‚

I’ve caved for NaNo. I told myself I wouldn’t what with driving lessons and a PGCE application to sort out. But I was planning on taking a blogging break anyway in November to write save for TTT and RTW so I figured it might as well be part of NaNo. I like the discipline it gives me. πŸ™‚

That story sounds great and if it gives you an extra push for it, then why not? IΒ΄ll be admiring your dedication and cheering you on! I have been thinking about joining but I donΒ΄t want the extra pressure right now since work is so busy, and IΒ΄m about to start querying (I am thinking end of October :P).
    Keep us updated!

    • cds says:

Thank you, Elodie. I’ll try to post updates. In fact, I really don’t want my blogging to fall off too much. I enjoy sharing my thoughts here, and I’d miss all this interaction and mutual cheering on. So, I hope not to wander too far from the blogisphere. πŸ™‚

And all the best with querying! πŸ˜€

Congrats on 400 posts! What an accomplishment!

I can’t wait to hear what you decide about NaNo! I was pretty inspired to join this year as well, but then I realized my November is already extremely full. So, I’m doing my own little version, OctNo, all by myself! πŸ™‚ It’s been lots of fun, and I’m not taking it very seriously – just trying to get in the habit of working to a certain number of words every day. So far, so good.

I really like the idea of using NaNo as a way to finish a WIP. I have a couple that I’ve felt stalled on. Maybe challenging myself to finish one by Dec. 1st would be the kick in the seat I need. Hmm…thanks, Colin, for the great idea! πŸ™‚
