RTW: Book of the Month for March, 2013
Before we begin, you might have noticed a new look to the blog. This is not my doing. I use a template designed by someone else (“SimpleNotes” by Carla Izumi Bamford), and sometime recently, the designer updated the template. I don’t hate it, though I prefer the old look. Oh well. I plan to make my own template some time soon. Then I’ll feel like a real blogger–like when a Jedi makes their own lightsaber. Anyway, just in case you were wondering…
It’s the end of March. 2013 is already a quarter done. And Spring is sort-of-here-but-not-really. Technically it’s Spring, but the weather has yet to catch up. Most importantly for today, it’s that time on the YA Highway Road Trip Wednesday calendar to reflect on our past month’s reading and pick a favorite book. Last month I had a hard time choosing a book–in fact, I didn’t. None of the books I read measured up to the standard I set for consideration as a “Book of the Month.” This month, I have the opposite problem. Just about every book I’ve read this month was great, and worthy of recommendation. And the list of books I’ve read include YA, non-YA, and non fiction. The book I have chosen for my March Book of the Month is…
SCARLET by Marissa Meyer. No surprise there to readers of this blog, or to people who have read–and raved about–this book. I reviewed it a few weeks ago (see HERE), so I won’t rehash my verbal exuberance here. I will say that this is more than just a great idea for a story. It’s a good book on many levels: execution, style, voice, character. The way Scarlet’s story is integrated into Cinder’s. The twists in the tale–especially when you know it’s based on “Little Red Riding Hood,” and so you have expectations about where it’s going… and it doesn’t go there… or does it…? Very cleverly done. I can’t encourage you enough to read this. I don’t care if sci-fi’s not your thing, or YA isn’t your thing. This is a series that transcends “things.” Yes, it’s that good.
At the beginning of the month, I gave a heads-up about the release of Stephanie Jaye Evans’s SAFE FROM HARM, the second in her Sugar Land Mysteries series, featuring Pastor Walker “Bear” Wells. I expected it to be as good as her debut, FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH, which I enjoyed, and I was wrong. It’s better! I have a full review of it on Goodreads, but since I mentioned the book on the blog prior to reading it, I wanted to let you know that I have read it and it is excellent. The story revolves around the death of Phoebe, a sometime-friend of Bear’s teenage daughter. It seems a clear-cut case of suicide, but as the story progresses, there’s more to the case than meets the eye. I especially want to draw my YA reader/writer friends to this book because Jo, Bear’s daughter, features heavily, and I think Stephanie has done a wonderful job of writing her. Jo is a complex character. She’s a pastor’s daughter, but she is struggling with her own identity, living with parents she loves, but wanting to strike out on her own, not always wanting to follow the rules. She’s rebellious, and there are times she breaks her parents’ hearts, but she knows she’s loved. There’s something very real about Jo and her family situation that I think readers of YA will appreciate. So, my shout-out of the month is SAFE FROM HARM, by Stephanie Jaye Evans.
What was your favorite read this month? Have you read SCARLET or SAFE FROM HARM and want to offer your thoughts? Or perhaps you want to participate in the Road Trip yourself: the details are on the YA Highway blog.
SCARLET was my favourite March read for sure, and for all of the reasons that you mention. Like you say, there are certain expectations we approach the book with knowing that it’s based on LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD. I thought what she did with the story was very clever, particularly with the wolf. And I have to agree that this is one of those series that is great for even those who don’t like YA or sci-fi or a combination thereof. π
And I hate that I have to wait until next year for the next installment! I know, I’m being impatient. Books take time to proof and perfect before they’re ready for eager readers… π But I’m excited to see what she does with Rapunzel and Snow White. These are characters we’ve already met (Cress and Winter), so we already know they have a place in the story arc… which makes it even more intriguing. π
My book of the month as well. π Loved Scarlet. There were a couple of things I wasn’t quite keen on but generally I enjoyed it and it’s still remaining to be one of my top series to read and continue with.
The thing I’m not looking forward to is waiting a year. *head desk*. Oh well, there’s a lot of good books I’ve got to read this year and I’ll keep most of my excitement for the last Divergent book. π
Akkk!! The waiiiit!!! But you’re right. We have DETERGENT coming out in October. That will help. And I have plenty of books on my TBR to tide me over. I’ve still yet to read UNRAVEL ME by Tahereh Mafi (it’s next on my list), and the rest of Beth Revis’s ACROSS THE UNIVERSE series. And… and… and… π
I saw Marissa Meyer on the “Scarlet Tour.” She was fabulous. I haven’t read either one of her Lunar Chronicle books, YET. But I plan to… after my daughter’s finished with them. Happy to hear great raves about them.
I keep telling my oldest daughter she needs to read them… and hopefully she will one day soon. I hope you get to read them soon, Christine–it’ll be worth the wait. π
I really need to read The Lunar Chronicles. On my ever growing TBR list 0.o
It’s a lot of fun, well written, good characters, great story… what’s not to love about it? π Yeah, these RTWs make my TBR groan… π
I’m so far behind right now. I desperately need to read CINDER. I keep hearing fantastic things about it–and SCARLET–I just haven’t gotten to it yet!
You have until 2015 until the entire 4-book series is out, so you have time to catch up. π Seriously, though, you might want to jump on the Lunar Chronicles bandwagon sooner rather than later. You won’t regret it. π
My copy of SCARLET is still sitting there on my coffee table taunting me. I recently went to the library and left with a a huge stack of books, so I need to finish those first, seeing as I don’t actually own them. I’ve been hearing great things about SCARLET, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it whenever I finally get around to reading it.
Thankfully our local libraries are not well stocked on books I want to read, otherwise I’d have the same problem! π Have you read CINDER? If not, you need to start there. If you have, and you enjoyed it, you’ll love SCARLET.
I haven’t read ‘Cinder’ or ‘Scarlet’ and now… okay, I’m clearing out my reading schedule. Thank you for the kick in the pants π
You are very welcome, Nickie. π I hope you enjoy them both.
I will definitely have to check out Safe From Harm, as well as Faithful Unto Death. I saw someone else mentioned Scarlet as well- it must be worth the read. Thanks.
Yes, CINDER and SCARLET are very much worth reading. CINDER came very close to being my book of the year for 2012, but SHATTER ME by Tahereh Mafi was just so amazing, it had to win. I hope you check out Stephanie’s novels. I think you’ll enjoy them. π
I will have to check out Safe From Harm – love the title – Massive attack song? Anyway, loved Cinder so Scarlet is on me TBR list for sure!!
Stephanie’s series is an ongoing thing–not a trilogy–so you don’t have to read FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH before you read SAFE FROM HARM. I hope you enjoy it. π
I more or less avoided sci fi (except dystopian) like the plague until I read Cinder, and now I can’t get enough of it. You know, in case that sways anyone.
Thanks, Stephanie. I totally agree that you don’t have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy CINDER and SCARLET. Indeed, these books might turn you into a sci-fi fan… π
I haven’t read either of these books but you have piqued my interest with both of them.
I’m one of the A-Z Minions and just wanted to stop by to say hello. I’m glad to have found your blog, it’s nice to meet you. Good luck with the Challenge! π
Thank you for stopping by, Julie! I wish you all the best with the Challenge, too. It’s going to be a fun month. π
These both sound fantastic – 2 more books to add to my reading list. π
I hope you enjoy them, Kimberly! π
