RTW: Cross-Country Companion

It’s Day 3 of the A to Z Blogging Challenge, and it’s also Road Trip Wednesday day on YA Highway. This week, the YA Highway folks want to kDoctor-RTW-1now:

If you could visit any country with a fictional character as your guide, who would you pick and where would you go?

This may seem like an obvious answer if you’re a regular to the blog, but I would choose The Doctor (as in Doctor Who). My reason may not be so obvious. You see, I’m a contradiction. I’m a home-bod, but I like foreign travel, experiencing different cultures, and meeting people from different countries. I’m also not very adept socially. It takes me a while to get comfortable with people. I don’t do small-talk very well. Now, once I’m comfortable with someone, I can yabber on for hours. But it’s that initial awkward “Uhh… hello…” that doesn’t help if you want to meet people and get to know them. This is why The Doctor would be my perfect traveling companion. He would be all smiles and enthusiasm, going up to complete strangers saying, “Hello, I’m the Doctor and this is my friend Colin. We’re new in town–my, that’s an interesting hat…” etc. I would learn a lot more than if I was left on my own.

Where would we go? Honestly, I wouldn’t care. The Doctor would make it interesting, wherever it was. However, I know the first thing he would ask me when I step into the TARDIS would be: “So, Colin–where d’you want to go?” I ought to have an answer ready, so I’d probably say Scandinavia. Maybe Norway or Finland. I’ve never been to any Scandinavian countries, and I’ve always wanted to visit that part of the world.

What about you? Who would be your ideal fictional traveling companion, and where would you go? You can share your thoughts in the comments, or join in the Road Trip (see the YA Highway blog for details).

The Doctor made my list of three fictional characters. ^^ I couldn’t choose!

    • cds says:

I didn’t want to choose the Doctor at first–I wanted to try to keep it strictly literary. But if I’m being honest, the Doctor would be my choice over any other fictional character I could think of. πŸ™‚

  2. Plus the Doctor would keep any alien attacks from ruining your excursion. Nice choice!

    • cds says:

Excellent point, Nickie! Yes–the Doctor is a bit of a magnet for trouble, but at least I’ll be safe. Sort of. πŸ˜‰

  3. I’ll be your tour guide in Finland πŸ™‚

    • cds says:

Cool! Thanks, Suzanne! πŸ˜€ Maybe one day wifey and I will get to travel more, and we might take you up on that offer. πŸ™‚

  4. Carrie says:

The Doctor would be a great person to travel with. Great choice.

  5. April Smith says:

Is that your b-day present at work? If so, yeah me for getting it for you; and yeah you, because it is cute and not too bad!

    • cds says:

Yes, it is! Yeah you! πŸ˜€ Thanks. πŸ™‚

One big advantage of having the Doctor as a traveling companion: there’d be room for our whole family in the TARDIS… just. πŸ˜‰

  6. I haven’t watched the entirety of Doctor Who yet, but I’ve watched enough to know he would make an excellent traveling companion. Great choice!

    • cds says:

Now, when you say “entirety,” do you mean starting from 1963, or 2005? πŸ˜€ Frankly, you don’t have to watch 50 years of Doctor Who to know he would be awesome! Thanks, Stephanie. πŸ™‚

  7. Rebekah says:

I used the Doctor as one of mine as well. To me, he just felt like the most logical (AWESOME) choice. It is a little obvious, but it would be silly not to travel with the Doctor.

    • cds says:

Naturally, I totally agree, Rebekah. Who wouldn’t want to travel with a gregarious Time Lord who’s already well-traveled and can take you to the most interesting places in the universe? πŸ™‚

  8. Melanie says:

I’ve heard so much about Doctor Who on twitter that I know I’ve got to watch the show sometime. I’d need someone to help me with convos too because I’m not great at the small talk either.

    • cds says:

Yes! In fact, if you want some help getting started on Doctor Who, be sure to catch my A-to-Z post for tomorrow (guess what I chose for “D”? πŸ˜€ )

The Doctor would be superb with the small talk, and probably learn more than you would think from it! πŸ™‚

  9. Jemima Pett says:

I’d take George, one of my Princelings. He’s the sort of chap that would know what to do in any emergency, and never be anything other than a delightful companion. Come to think of it, I’ve already travelled with him on one of my interview excursions on my blog last September!

    Lovely idea – happy A to Z-ing!

    • cds says:

Thanks, Jemima! A companion who doesn’t get flustered in a tight situation would be ideal, I agree. Thanks for stopping by! πŸ™‚

  10. Miss Jersey says:

I would also pick the Doctor, mainly because he has free transportation to any planet anywhere anywhen. I wouldn’t need to stick to Earth! If I could go anywhere on Earth though, I’d pick Jamaica or South Africa. But Scandinavia would also be amazing to visit.

    • cds says:

And what a cool free ride! You could spend days just touring around the TARDIS, let alone getting out and seeing other places. πŸ™‚ South Africa would be an interesting place to visit, too.

  11. The Golden Eagle says:

The Doctor would be a great guide. I totally agree on visiting a Scandinavian country, too; Sweden, Norway, Denmark, they seem like such interesting places.

  12. Cori Vidae says:

Ahh, dude. Who could resist traveling with the Doctor? Not me. I think you made the right choice πŸ™‚

  13. tracykuhn says:

I’d love to travel with him, preferably Tom Baker but the others will do too. I would, however, like to know if he has a toilet on the TARDIS…

    • cds says:

I’m actually a Patrick Troughton fan. In fact, I’ve just finished watching a reconstruction of “Fury from the Deep”… have I established my complete-and-utter-Who-geek status? πŸ˜‰

It would be sad if the TARDIS had a library, a swimming pool, bedrooms, and an infinite amount of other rooms, but no toilet. Though I don’t recall any of the companions ever saying, “Give me a moment, Doctor–I need to pee.” πŸ™‚

  14. Elaine says:

I’m a watcher, I make small talk like a bad hairdresser. I gravitate to the earnest and nerdy corners where the best conversations range over wide topics. If I couldn’t tag along with The Doctor, and travel to anywhere at any point in time (awesome) I’d aim to crowd Holmes and Watson – whether off the building or over the waterfall I’d want to be there to help.

    • cds says:

Holmes and Watson would be a good alternative. You’d have to have Watson though–Holmes might be as insightful as the Doctor, but he wouldn’t be quite as friendly. πŸ™‚

  15. Cindy Dwyer says:

I’d pick Superman so I’d never have to go through airport security or worry about the weight of my luggage. Plus I know I’d be safe.

    • cds says:

The only place you wouldn’t be safe is, as Stephen King likes to quip, the one place Superman can’t go: the ladies’ bathroom! πŸ™‚ Still, cheap air transportation and protection from the bad guys isn’t a bad thing… πŸ™‚

  16. Samantha says:

    That is so cool!

  17. E.Maree says:

Love that image! The Doctor is a brilliant choice, of course. πŸ™‚

    • cds says:

Woo!! A real artist likes my picture!!! πŸ˜€ Thanks, Emma!

The Doctor is the perfect travel companion. Though I think I’d end up being the companion… πŸ™‚
