Sunday Devotional: Psalm 92:1-2 (2-3)
1 It is good to give praise to the Lord and to make music to Your name, Most High; 2 To proclaim Your loving-kindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness in the night.
Psalm 92 is a song of praise and thanksgiving, declaring God’s goodness and provision for the psalmist, and His punishment on the wicked–those who are the psalmist’s adversaries. He calls the works of the Lord great, and His thoughts too deep for men to understand, especially those who minds are not set on the things of God. Those who are of the Lord benefit from God’s almighty hand which causes them to flourish and bear fruit. And perhaps more than all this, the Most High God is the firm, faultless rock upon which the psalmist stands.
The opening words seem a little tame: surely it’s more than “good” to sing God’s praise? It’s something all creation, including godless men, ought to do constantly. But if we consider all the things the world tells us are good–some of which really are good and beneficial, like food, drink, exercise, and spending time with friends and family–they don’t really compare with exalting our Lord and Savior. Of all that we might call “good,” this is what is truly good. Anything else we might consider “good” pales in comparison to praising our Creator. We might not always be able to “make music” to Him on our own, but we certainly can when we gather for corporate worship on the Lord’s Day. How important it is for us to be in the Lord’s house every week, rather than doing whatever other activity we might consider “good”!
But praising God isn’t just a weekly thing. Each morning, we should, with the psalmist, proclaim God’s loving-kindness–His graciousness to us, giving us life and breath, that He enabled us to live another day, and has given us all that we have. And then at night, at the end of the day, after all that has happened, we need to acknowledge God’s faithfulness to us. Despite all that might have happened to us since we got out of bed, whether good or bad, the Lord is still there for us. He is still our rock and our faultless, firm foundation. Whatever life may throw at us, our security can rest in Him and not our circumstances.
May we always give praise to God, at church with His people, and every day that, by His grace, He gives us life.
Have a great week!
