BOLO

For the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge this year, I’m posting a 100 word piece of flash fiction every day. It might be a self-contained story, or a scene–whatever, it’ll be fiction, and it’ll be over in a flash! Today’s story is…

BOLO

The dogs pulled hardβ€”when they catch a scent, there’s no stopping themβ€”and we soon came to a small, thatch-roofed cottage. A young girl in a long nightgown and golden pig tails answered the door. I pulled out the BOLO.

“Excuse me, miss, but have you seen an obese, white male with a white beard…?”

“Oh yes!” the girl nodded.

“Is he here?”

“No,” said the girl. “He left that-a-way.” She pointed toward the horizon.

“Thank you ma’am,” I said. I returned to my sled and pick up the walkie-talkie.

“Patrol B to Grinch Central. Suspect spotted. In pursuit.”

Check back tomorrow for C…

Ha! Thanks for that, Bhavya–I didn’t know. This was the first term that came to mind when I thought of “B” (in the US, BOLO means “Be On the Look Out”–though if you’ve watched enough US cop shows, you probably know that!).

Thank you for teaching me something new today! πŸ™‚

haha… this was cute. I love the flash fiction theme.

Thanks, Stephanie! I’ve tried to vary the themes for each story, so this one is a little different to yesterday’s. And tomorrow’s is radically different from today’s… πŸ™‚

This is certainly different from yesterday’s flash. Great job πŸ™‚

You think this is different? Wait until tomorrow–the gear change might cause whip-lash! πŸ˜‰ Thanks, Laura! πŸ˜€

  4. I had no idea what BOLO was until I read through the comments! I guess I need to watch some more police shows.

Cool! We’ve all learned something today. You and Bhavya found out what a BOLO is in the US, and I learned that “bolo” is Hindi for “tell”! Who knew flash fiction could be so educational? πŸ˜€

  5. Very cute! You are so good at these!

I’ve watched enough NCIS to know what a BOLO was, but I didn’t anticipate who this investigator was working for until that last line. πŸ™‚

Of all the B-words in the world, I have no earthly idea why BOLO came to mind. Maybe my inner Gibbs was speaking to me… πŸ˜‰ I’m glad the surprise worked.

I love the idea of Grinches get together to find Santa Clause. Very cute.

  8. I was wracking my brain for what BOLO meant and couldn’t figure it out until I saw someone say it in the comments. Also, love this. The last bit made who they were after make so much sense.

Ha! This is wonderful! Flash fiction is so difficult – you captured a lot in these few words. And I, also, just learned what BOLO means. πŸ™‚ So thanks!

    • cds says:

Thank you, Kitty! Well, I’m pleased this little story has prepared so many for US cop shows. Now, every time you hear someone talking about a BOLO, you’ll think of Grinch Central… πŸ˜‰ Seriously, I’m glad you enjoyed this.
