Flash

For the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge this year, I’m posting a 100 word piece of flash fiction every day. It might be a self-contained story, or a scene–whatever, it’ll be fiction, and it’ll be over in a flash! Today’s story is…

Flash

It looked more like a confessional than a photo booth. In the middle of the mall? My curiosity piqued, I ventured behind the crimson curtain and sat on the velvet cushioned seat.

The word SMILE suddenly appeared in LED letters on the plate glass screen in front of me. I smiled.

Flash.

Flash.

Flash.

A message blinked:

Please wait…

The booth interior was wood paneled, and warm like an embrace. So why did I shiver?

A new message appeared:

Your soul has been found wanting. Please prepare for penance.

I tried to leave but the seat give way beneath me….

Check back tomorrow for G…

    oo. Good one!

  2. Love it! You should make that an entire book!

I’d read a book consisting entirely of flash fiction – I wonder if I can write one consisting entirely of limericks… who says ‘good’ has to be ‘long’? πŸ™‚ (You’re one of a small handful I’m visiting every day by the way – even smaller if you discount those belonging to friends – adore your work!)

I wonder how a flash fiction book would work? If the pieces were really short (like mine), it would either be a very short book, or it would have a LOT of flash fiction in it! Perhaps if the pieces were no more than 500 words, 1000 at the most, that might work. And perhaps from a variety of authors. It would be interesting. Good doesn’t have to be long–and limerick books have a long tradition.

And thanks for your kind words, Cath! I hope you continue to enjoy the stories this month. πŸ™‚

  4. Nice one. Like the ending.

Thank you, Patricia! Melanie (above) suggested it could be the basis of a novel… and I can think of some ways I could go with that. We’ll see… πŸ˜€

Uh oh. Given that it’s a photo booth, I’m wondering if vanity had anything to do with this one?

Oh, that’s not good! I love the idea. It’s creepy, but I could see that happening in a futuristic society for sure.
