Invisible
For the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge this year, I’m posting a 100 word piece of flash fiction every day. It might be a self-contained story, or a scene–whatever, it’ll be fiction, and it’ll be over in a flash! Today’s story is…
Invisible
I pour the last of the tea into Terry’s mug.
“Susan’s coming in an hour,” I say. “Won’t you stay to see her?”
He drains his mug and grips my hand.
“No,” he says. “She doesn’t understand.”
“But she’s our daughter!”
Terry just smiles and kisses my cheek. “Later, Corrine.”
And he’s gone.
And I’m alone with the flowers on the window sill, and the sympathy cards on the bedside table.
I’ve tried talking to Susan, but she says I’m imagining Terry. Grief, she calls it. But I’m never sad when he’s here, and he’s always here—just sometimes invisible.
Check back tomorrow for J…
Beautiful and heartbreaking.
Thanks, Jennifer–glad you like it. 🙂
Wow!
That’s very kind of you, Keith–thanks. 🙂
First time here. So much in those few words. I’ll be checking out the earlier posts. Nicely done.

Thank you, Marlene, for your encouragement, and for visiting. I hope you enjoy the earlier posts too! 🙂
Lovely but sad piece.

Thanks, Patricia. I do have some lighter stories coming up, promise… 🙂
So touching, and heartbreaking.
🙂
Awwwwwww – so sad – your ability to convey so much in so few words is really something! A newly made friend of mine is a teacher and is getting his kids to do this (stories in 100 words based on a short prompt) – I told him about your site 🙂
Thank you, Cath! Wow! I’m humbled. 🙂 I plan to compile all these A-to-Z posts into a single document at the end of the month for those that enjoyed them and want to keep them, pass them around, etc. I know some educators (especially here in the US) feel a little uncomfortable directing their students to sites like mine given all the religious content, so that document would help in that regard.
ooo – yes – I’ll definitely take that 🙂
I really like this. And it reminds me of a book I read recently but I don’t want to say the title and give something away…
Thanks, Melanie. Hmmm… you’ve got me intrigued about the book. I guess I’ll have to find all the books you mention on your WUW posts and read them all… 🙂
Oh…I did not see that coming, and despite the sadness, enjoyed it.
Thank you, Andrea–I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I love said stories, and you were able to pack so much into this one. Very well done 🙂
Thanks, Kim. 🙂
Coping can take so many forms. Excellent piece!
Thank you, Chuck! 🙂
