Flash Fiction Friday

This week’s words from the Random Word Generator are:

  • Reason
  • Brick
  • Cannon
  • Kitchen
  • Menu

I’m dedicating this 100-word story to my friends over in the comments section of Janet Reid’s blog. I hope you enjoy it:

Some neighborhood kids diving cannonballs into the lake were first to see him. One dared to go in for a closer look, head submerged just long enough to confirm every boyโ€™s dream and nightmare: theyโ€™d found a dead body.

Two police divers pulled him out, and Detective Christie immediately began looking for clues. The manโ€™s coat bore the logo of The Healthy Kitchen. What reason would someone have to kill the chef of a popular eatery?

Then he saw the brick tied to his hands, and the mark: N-N.

He put lima beans on the menu. Two-Ns had struck again.

Have a wonderful week!

  1. Seems a bit harsh just because of lima beans!

Personally, I like lima beans. But some of my fellow commenters over at Janet’s blog have quite opposite feelings about those little green packets of deliciousness. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Green pockets of deliciousness, how could you.

I am honored my friend that you would consider me fodder. I’ve never been fodder before. I like it. And to Patricia Lynne, lima beans deserve harshness.

I’m glad you like it, 2Ns. When the word generator gave me “kitchen” and “menu” I couldn’t resist this little homage to our friendly lima bean controversy. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • I love the Lynne part of your name. (2Ns) Colin will explain.

  2. Jed Cullan says:

Nice one, Colin. A great little story. Wonder when and where 2Ns will strike again?

  3. AJ Blythe says:

Colin, you cracked me up. I love the homage to Carolynn and the ongoing sparring over lima beans.

I’ve just shown your Friday flash fiction to Heckle who has to write a 500 word story for school. I wanted to show him how a story can be done with a short word count. I’ve now had to explain to him the history of lima beans and what 2Ns mean, lol.

Thank you, Anita! I’m glad the story could be an education in more ways than one. The next step is to feed him some lima beans so he can get the full, glorious experience… ๐Ÿ™‚
