Obsolete
Today is Day Fifteen of the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge. Click on the letter picture to the right for more information about this blog hop. Like last year, I’m writing 100-word flash fiction stories/poems/scenes for this year’s challenge. Today’s is:
Obsolete
“We call it NetBot,” said Professor Jones patting the beige box. “In here is the pooled wisdom of every computer on the planet.”
A murmur made its way around the UN Council Chamber.
“And to show what it can do, I’ve asked it for the perfect formula for energy efficiency.”
There was a beep, and all eyes turned to the box.
“My calculation is complete,” it said. “Computers control banks, businesses, governments, and entertainment. Humans are now no longer necessary. They are, therefore, the biggest global inefficiency. I have launched nuclear warheads to correct this problem in approximately four minutes.”
Come back tomorrow for P…
J here, stopping by from the #atozchallenge 2015!
Great post. I’m following you on your listed social media sites. Congratulations on making it past the first half.
@JLenniDorner
LOL. Computers in fiction always seem to come to that conclusion…
Thank you, J! If sci-fi has taught us anything, it’s we ought to be cautious about giving too much power to computers… 🙂
Did Professor Jones not watch any of the Terminator movies? He should have seen that coming.
Ha! Clearly not… 🙂
Uh oh. The answer wasn’t a surprise but the warheads sure were. Good stuff, Colin.
Thanks, AJ! 🙂
Guess it’s goodbye then!
I guess so..! 😀
Hee hee! Besides the Terminator movies, it reminds me of an episode of Star Trek: the original series, with another computer that wanted to achieve perfection and its decision that humans weren’t perfect so…
I think I vaguely remember that episode of Star Trek, Barb. This is not an original theme, but one we need to be reminded of now and again, I think. 🙂
Okay Colin, this flash fiction gets an F. Everyone knows a computer’s answer to life, the universe, and everything is 42. =)
I know, I know… but that would have been too obvious. 🙂
I’ve always known I’m not nessasary but I am needed. Someone has to load the dishwasher.
Good job. I like this one, a lot.
Thanks, 2Ns! Yeah, we all serve a purpose–if only to keep those darned computers in their place. 🙂
