Today is Day Seventeen of the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge. Click on the letter picture to the right for more information about this blog hop. Like last year, I’m writing 100-word flash fiction stories/poems/scenes for this year’s challenge. Today’s is:
Quart
Matthew joined the end of the line, trying to block the sounds of children groaning for food, their mothers weeping in hopeless desperation.
“How much?”
He suddenly faced a stern official behind a makeshift table, guards stationed either side.
“A quart of wheat.” Matthew handed over his denarius. The official measured the wheat, hardly enough for one, and poured it into a bag.
“Aren’t you Matthew the Coppersmith?”
“Yes?”
“The Guild rebel who would rather starve his family than worship ‘idols’? I thought you Christians were supposed be about love!”
Matthew prayed for strength, took his wheat, and walked away.
