Today is Day Twenty-Five of the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge. Click on the letter picture to the right for more information about this blog hop. Like last year, I’m writing 100-word flash fiction stories/poems/scenes for this year’s challenge. Today’s is:
Yahoo!
Mary pulled up Messenger and drew a deep breath. She had to do it sooner or later, but something in the pit of her stomach held her back.
That conversation only last month. A mundane back and forth.
“How was it today?”
“Not so bad, Mary. How about you?”
“Good. John’s getting a promotion! :)”
“Wonderful! Send him our love.”
“You’d tell me if things weren’t okay, wouldn’t you Mom?”
“Don’t you worry, Mary. Everything’s just fine.”
“I love you.”
Mary stared at the account name. ProudMama89. An account that would never be used again.
Delete: Are you sure?
OK.
Come back tomorrow for the last day of the challenge: Z…
Parents will always try not to upset their children no matter how serious their situation. Poignant, sad.
Keith’s Ramblings
Indeed. Thanks, Keith. 🙂
What an excellent story, Colin. You know how to show rather than tell, touching your reader’s heart: bravo!
Thank you, Lilac. 🙂
Another great job. Very sad one though.
Thanks, Patricia. Sad, and strangely, possibly my favorite of this year’s stories.
Getting rid of those last connections are always hard.
It certainly is, Gwen. This was, in fact, inspired by real life. I remember well the day I deleted my Dad’s Yahoo ID from Messenger a while after he passed. It was like saying a final goodbye. Such a small thing to do, but not really so small.
Sad. I hope Z is happy. But that’s just me. I like happy endings.

A happy ending? Hmmm… only a few hours to wait and see! 😉
