2015 Year End Review… Too Long–I Sum Up!
See what I did there? “Princess Bride” reference? Yes? No?
Anyway, here we are, the end of 2015. It’s funny how time seems to whiz by, and yet when you look back, a lot happened. I can handle that. It would be worse to look back over the year and realize you did nothing at all. I hope that’s not where you are this New Year’s Eve.
As far as the blog’s concerned, I added 160 new articles to the Internet’s electronic verbal dump–161 when this one goes up, giving a total of 975–er, 976–in total. I had an informal goal of hitting 1,000 posts this year. Good job it was informal, eh? Nevermind. I’m sure to hit it next year, what with Sunday School Notes and Who Reviews alone. But hopefully there’ll be lots of other interesting articles in 2016.
Here are the five most visited blog articles in 2015:
- Graham Crackers in the UK: An Update
- The Graham Cracker Question
- The Graham Cracker Question Revisited
- Paul’s Epistle to the Romans: Background
- 2014 World Cup Thoughts: The Finals
There was a particular upsurge in interest around the Graham Cracker articles during Christmas. I guess a lot of Brits were making cheesecake, or something. I don’t know. I still find it amusing that my little inquiry into British Graham Cracker substitutes is the most popular thing on this blog. At least it’s good for something.
A lot of things went on with the family, some of which I might have blogged about, some of which I know found its way into Janet Reid‘s comment box. This would include our car engine dying, which led to my wife trying to push the multi-ton Ford Excursion off the road, which led to her getting chest pain, which led to her having a procedure to remove a blockage. She’s fine, and the car got a new engine, but that was not the most pleasant May/June in our family’s history. FirstBorn also took a number of trips to Atlanta this year (along with my wife and our SecondBorn) as she continues to pursue her goal of getting into the acting profession.
The highlight of the year for me was undoubtedly Bouchercon, and the resulting blog articles are among my favorites of this year [Day 1, Day 2, Day 3]. Quote of the year goes to my literary agent friend Janet Reid. I had just spent a delightful 15 minutes in the company of Jessica Faust, another New York literary agent, and I returned to Jimmy V’s restaurant, where Janet and others were nursing drinks at a table. Ms. Reid asked how my chat went. I told her it went well, and Jessica was definitely on my list of agents to query. Janet looked daggers at me and said, “You have a list?!” Words to treasure. I’m sure fellow aspiring writers understand.
Thank you for stopping by the blog this year, even if you only drop in occasionally. I’m especially grateful to those who comment. You make this blog worthwhile. 🙂
Happy 2016 to you all!!
Seems lots of us had the chance to meet agents this year. It’s so helpful, isn’t it? 🙂
Happy New Year!
It certainly is, Cole. As much fun we derive from online interaction, and as useful a medium the internet is for getting to know people, nothing beats in-person. Have a wonderful New Year! 🙂
Happy New Year, Colin! I will always treasure our f2f at Bouchercon!
It truly was a delight to meet you (and Terri, and Patrick, and Loretta, et al.) in person at last. I too will treasure those memories, and hope we can meet up again soon. 🙂
Happy New Year to you too, Donna!
Daggers indeed. You’re lucky you survived. Lesser mortals…have not.
Oh I know, I know… I’ve seen the remains in Slush Pile exile… *shiver*
Happy New Year, Colin!
Thanks! And to you too, Patricia. 🙂
Ha! Glad you survived the Shark to swim another day! All the best for 2016!
Thanks, Micki! I hope you have a great 2016. 🙂
Congrats on getting to almost 1000 posts. As you can tell from MY blog post today, I’m gonna be an OLD lady before I get to 1000 posts lol
Happy New Year!
Thanks, Dena! You’re doing just fine with your blog–more than just fine, it’s downright entertaining! So just keep doing what you’re doing. 🙂
Happy New Year to you, too!
Happy New Year and congratulations for the informal posts goal. I’m happy to hear your wife is well and I hope your acting child finds a darn good mentor.
You’re so lucky to have met Janet and Patrick Lee and Donna and Terri. I’d love to go to a US conference.
Best wishes for 2016.
Thank you, Angie! It was great meeting Janet, Donna, Patrick, et al., and Bouchercon was a really good venue for such a first meeting. Yes, I did tell Jessica Faust about my WiP, and Janet did answer questions about publishing, but neither were officially “working,” so there was no pressure. It was all social, so we got to know each other as real people. Next time might be at an actual writing conference–hopefully I’ll get to go to one soon. 🙂
Have a wonderful 2016 too!
I like your blog. Wanted to tell you over on La Shark’s, but I’ll tell you here. I enjoy the topics you post about, eclectic and diverse as they are.
Thank you, Heidi! There’s a simple reason why I post on the topics I do: it’s the only way for me to maintain interest in my blog. These topics are things I care about, and that’s how I’ve been able to keep this thing going for nearly 5 years now, otherwise I would have given up a long time ago.
Oh, Colin, print that out and frame it.
That was a framable moment, one that still makes me smile. 🙂
Glad your family is doing better! Sounds like a year full of highlights. Bouchercon sounds so, so amazing.
Thanks, Emma. Yes, Bouchercon exceeded expectations. 🙂
