Another Day
This is my fifth April A-to-Z Challenge. The past couple of years, I’ve written 100-word flash fiction each day. This year I’m doing the same, only with a twist: each day’s story will be inspired by the title of a Paul McCartney song. So let’s kick off the fun with…
ANOTHER DAY
Cans litter the road, their string tails frayed, untethered.
She strokes his cheek, gently, and tries a kiss. Like a fairytale princess, she hopes it will rouse him. She waits for the tell-tale rolling under the eyelids, a flicker, a smile of recognition.
But his eyes and lips remain still and closed.
Searing pain tears through her heart, claws at her throat, numbs her broken legs.
It was a kiss, a kiss like their first only hours before. But in the joy of the moment he lost control.
She looks to the sky. “Couldn’t we have just one more day?”
Check back tomorrow for “B”…
The original McCartney song was released as a single in 1971. It got to number 2 in the UK charts:
What a sorrowful tale. A great start to this year’s Challenge.
Keith’s Tiny Tales! My obscure word today is absquatulate
Thanks, Keith!
Oh, so sad this tale… I’m here to see you through April but I may not comment every day.
Cool! Thanks, Angie. 🙂 There’s a “like” button at the bottom of the post. That’s almost as good as a comment. 😉
Oh wow! What a beautiful piece!!! The ‘cans littering the road’ at the beginning gave me a flashback to a FF entry on the QOTKU’s blog some weeks back 🙂 but I love where you took this. I look forward to the next 25 posts!
Thanks, Kae! 🙂
Reminds me of another song, but so sad and lovely! Those kisses while driving will do that.

Thank you, Yolanda. And thanks for stopping by. 🙂
So sad and so beautifully written. Great start to the challenge 🙂
Debbie
Thanks, Debbie! 🙂
Wow, this is an incredibly specific theme… like my own. I’m going to enjoy this.
I didn’t pick a theme for my first two years of A-to-Z, and though it was fun, having a theme with a specific focus is, I think, better. Thanks, Silver Fox! 🙂
Great twist to an already cool theme idea! This one is sad, but lovely
Thank you, Andrea. 🙂
Awesome stuff, especially for an A day. Awe-inspiring. In fact, you might be too inspiring. Now I’m thinking about jumping into this A to Z blogging derby. Somebody stop me before I jump in…
Thanks, John. Do you see me stopping you? Do you? Jump on in, the water’s lovely… 🙂
Well written short! Will be back for more, so don’t quit!

Nice imagery Colin!
Why, thank you Jason!
Wow, Colin! Just wow! You are amazing at this flash fiction stuff. This is just gorgeous. And what a great artist to use as inspiration. Looking forward to the rest of your entries.
Awww, thanks, EM. You’re such an encourager! 🙂 Yay, Macca! 😀
What a poignant beginning to the challenge. I had to read it twice to make sure I’d fully understood everything going on.
Thanks, Kate. I did wonder about starting on such a downer, but it’s the story that came, and nothing better came along to replace it, so…
Oh my gosh. That was so sad. Don’t do that again!!
Ummm… weeeell… can’t make any promises, but they’re not all like this. 🙂
Sad but lovely.
Thanks, Dena!
What a great theme. I enjoyed this piece and am looking forward to the rest.
Thanks so much, Jennifer. I hope you enjoy them. 🙂
A sad little tale. Great job.

Thanks, Patricia. 🙂
How poignant.
I confess a curiosity for your theme and how you will match for those strange letters Q and X.
Thank you, Your Grace. 🙂 Mmmm… stay tuned to find out… 😉
Beautiful and sad, Colin.. enjoyed this! I will be reading all of your stories via the Catch Up #1 and will let you know which one I enjoyed the most when I am done 🙂
Thank you, Lori! 🙂
Welcome dear 🙂
