Every Night
This is my fifth April A-to-Z Challenge. The past couple of years, I’ve written 100-word flash fiction each day. This year I’m doing the same, only with a twist: each day’s story will be inspired by the title of a Paul McCartney song. So let’s continue the fun with…
EVERY NIGHT
Eddie hit the final E-major chord on his keyboard; Jimmy X ran across the stage, fingers flying over his fretboard. Eddie grinned, basking in the adulation, the electricity of the moment.
“I’m home,” Eddie shouted an hour later.
His mom pecked his cheek. “What was it tonight? Chopin? Tchaikovsky?”
“Debussy,” he said. “It was amazing.” After ten years of piano and three under the country’s finest classical maestros, he couldn’t tell them the truth.
“We must go to a concert, mustn’t we, George?”
“Yes,” said his father.
After Eddie left, George turned to his wife.
“Do they still wave lighters?”
Check back tomorrow for “F”…
“Every Night” is a track on Paul’s first album, “McCartney,” released in 1970.
This is one of my favorite Macca songs, so here’s a recent live rendition:
Ha! Great twist. We always think we outfox our parents.
Indeed! Thanks, Silver Fox. 🙂
This one made me go “aww” instead of “yikes”. Very nice Colin. Cool video too.
See! I can write “aww” stories too!! 😉 Thanks, Elise.
Thank God for an Awww story. You guys! I loved it and how very sweet. I don’t know how y’all are doing the flash fictions. Yikes.
Thanks, Julie. I may not be as good at the “Awww” stories, but I wanted to change things up a bit. And flash is a great form for experimenting with styles and genres.
I was going to say Awww too. What a delightful little tale
Keith’s Ramblings : 3 obscure E words
Thanks, Keith! 🙂
Go, Eddie! I’m so in his corner!
Also, this amazed me: 1970 was McCartney’s first album? Wow. Had no idea. So the Beatles were done before the 70s began, eh?
lol! The Beatles officially split in April 1970 (though the legal wranglings continued well into the 70s). The last album released was “Let It Be” in 1970, though it was actually recorded in 1969. The last album they recorded was “Abbey Road” also recorded and released in 1969. All that to say, yes, the Beatles were essentially done before the 70s began. In fact, in an interview issued as a press release just ahead of the “McCartney” album, Paul was asked, “Do you foresee a time when Lennon-McCartney becomes an active songwriting partnership again?” To which he replied, “No.” And, “Are you planning a new album or single with the Beatles?” To which he again replied, “No.”
What a lovely story. See, kids, Mom and Dad ALWAYS know!
Thanks, Celia. So true. My kids still don’t understand this fundamental principle. 😉
Such a lovely change of pace! You’re certainly VERY good at these Flash fiction stories!
Thank you, Kai. 🙂
Awww, that was a sweet ending. They totally know the truth.
