Girlfriend
This is my fifth April A-to-Z Challenge. The past couple of years, I’ve written 100-word flash fiction each day. This year I’m doing the same, only with a twist: each day’s story will be inspired by the title of a Paul McCartney song. So let’s continue the fun with…
GIRLFRIEND
Shirelle watched Gina load up her book bag.
“That’s a lot of work to be taking home.”
“Nothing better to do,” Gina sighed, closing her locker.
“I’d study with you, but I have a date with Tony,” said Shirelle. Gina rolled her eyes. “I’m sorry all the good guys have been taken, Gina. I’ve got Tony, Michele has Benjamin Jones, Tori’s going with Sam Charles—“
“Yeah, I get it,” said Gina. “Look, I’ll catch you later.”
Shirelle left. Gina checked her phone. One message from Tony:
Can’t make tonight.
Gina smiled. Never mind, there’s always Benjamin Jones, or Sam Charles…
Check back tomorrow for “H”…
“Girlfriend” is a track on the 1978 Wings album “London Town.” Paul wrote the song with Michael Jackson in mind, and offered the song to him. McCartney ended up recording it first, though Jackson did make a version of it for his “Off the Wall” album in 1979.
Here’s the Michael Jackson version:
Nobody is dead? Well, I suppose it fits the song. Very nicely done once more.
Ha! Well, I suppose Gina’s skating on thin ice… 😉 Thanks, Elise!
Hey there old buddy, old chap! 🙂
Colin, I don’t know how you do it! 100 word FF every day would put me into a state of panic. Kudos to you for pushing yourself towards this!
Just got caught up on all of them and have to say, you’re very consistent with carrying the stories! Great job!
Hello, Donna (stbnytba)! 😀
Thank you! It was certainly a challenge writing these. Some days I rattled off two or three in a day. Other letters took a few days of contemplation. But it seems they turned out okay. I’m happy with them, anyway, and it looks like a few others are enjoying them, so that’s cool. 🙂
You crack me up with that stbnytba. Hee! I made up a new acronym myself the other day. I told my publicist I was having a DAMN attack. (Debut Author Massive Nerve attack) I think my old Nortel days – and you – have rubbed off on me!
I think if I was in your shoes, I’d be reminding myself to live and enjoy the moment, because I know I’d be a bundled mess of excitement, nerves, and FOTU (Fear Of The Unknown). 🙂 I AM looking forward to reading your novel (THE EDUCATION OF DIXIE DUPREE, available to pre-order from http://www.amazon.com/Education-Dixie-Dupree-Donna-Everhart/dp/1496705513/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1460125264&sr=8-1&keywords=donna+everhart)!
I do it every single day – I do! And yes, all of that, nerves, FOTU, (ha!) excitement…all mixed up = DAMN.
🙂
Thanks for linking Colin – you da man!
You’re very welcome! 😀
Your twist endings are excellent!
Thank you, Silver Fox. 🙂
Wow, Colin! I’m SO glad my high school days are behind me. (so very very very far behind me). And *grinning* at your linking Donna’s preorder! 😀 😀 😀
There were girls I knew in school (also a very very very long time ago) I wouldn’t put past doing this kind of thing. Thankfully, I was never a victim. 🙂
Girls are awful, aren’t they? Especially teenage girls!
Some can be. My teens are wonderful. Most of the time. 😉
Girls are awful. Really! LOL
I’ve often heard it said that girls can be at their worse with other girls, especially teenage girls.
I can’t relate to that. And if I remember correctly, it was the teenage boys who tormented me. 🙂
Yeah, well, that’s what I’d heard. Boys can be pretty mean to each other too. My teenagers have their moments, but they find ways to get along. And they’re all pretty good with their peers too, boys and girls. I daresay the boys only tormented you because they liked you. Boys are like that. 🙂
Loved the devious nature of this one, Colin
Thanks! At least no-one died… 😉
*laughs* true, but I don’t mind the ones where people died.. sometimes those are bravely written stories
