A to Z Catch Up #2
We’re more than half-way through the 2016 April A-to-Z Blogging Challenge here on the blog. If you’ve just joined us from March (or earler–where have you been?!), click on the link to find out more about this challenge. Those who’ve been checking in know that I’m writing 100-word flash fiction stories inspired by Paul McCartney song titles. Sunday’s a day off, so it’s a good day to catch up if you’ve missed reading any of the posts.
Here’s where we’ve been:
Do you have a favorite? One that has stuck with you since you read it? Maybe you declared a favorite last week, but have since changed your mind. I’d like to know, since I’m considering developing one or two of these into short stories.
Here are some A-to-Z blogs I’ve been enjoying:
- Dena Pawling: An A-Z of military definitions
- Julie Weathers: Civil War tidbits and clips from her novel THE RAIN CROW.
- John Frain: Six-sentence stories with a professional theme (e.g., “Editor”, “Lion Tamer”, “Nurse”–that kind of thing).
- K. Ridwyn: Lessons from God’s metaphors.
- The Idylls of Alleysiande: E. M. Goldsmith (Elise to her friends) shares beer, talks about fantasy themes and characters, and shares some stories.
- The Lair of the Silver Fox: Silver Fox shares an A-Z of Golden-Age Comic Book characters with the same name As modern-day characters. With pictures, too!
- Fiction and Film: Kate Larkindale’s A-Z of New Zealand films. If (like me) you know nothing about the NZ film industry, you’ll be surprised at how rich and diverse it is.
There are hundreds of people participating in the challenge this year, so I’m sorry if I didn’t mention yours (especially if you’ve commented here). I’ll share more next week.
Don’t forget to tell me your favorite Macca-inspired flash story. And come back tomorrow to read “O”!
It’s a tough call, Colin. I’ve truly enjoyed several. So here goes with my very unscientific answer to your question.
Gold Medal (so far): Hope of Deliverance.
But I don’t think that’s the best one to move into a short story.
Silver medal: Coming Up
However, I think this one is similar to the Gold Medal winner in that it’s a great piece of flash, but I’m not sure it works as a short story. I could be wrong here, just my thinking. It doesn’t seem like the concept could be carried for a few thousand words, but as I type that I think there could be some really fun backstory to it. And maybe the protagonist has been working up to their big day in the sun and when it comes they’re never gonna make it because … well, because they’re time has been coming up and now it arrived.
Bronze Medal: Every Night
In my mind, you could probably rank these top 3 as 1-2-3 in about any order, but I just enjoyed the payoff of the first two the most. This one, however, works for me in a longer piece. For my mind anyway.
Good luck to you. And of course, let us know when you finish that short story and it sells. In fact, heck, I’ll throw an offer out to you. If you finish it and want another pair of eyes to look it over, I might know somebody. Hint, hint, nudge, nudge. Lemme know, if you’re ever interested.
Thank you for your feedback, John. I really do appreciate it. I’m always glad to know of eyes that are willing to help me make my work better, so consider your eyes on notice. 🙂 Thanks again!
what a fab idea for the A-Z challenge – so many bloggers have come up with deliciously different themes
Thanks, Zannie. There are some wonderfully creative themes this year.
Thanks for the shout-out!
You’re welcome, Silver Fox!
