Queenie Eye

QThis is my fifth year participating in the April A-to-Z Challenge. The past couple of years, I’ve written 100-word flash fiction each day. This year I’m doing the same, only with a twist: each day’s story will be inspired by the title of a Paul McCartney song. So let’s continue the fun with…

QUEENIE EYE

Aziza opened an eye. The palace was quiet. She slipped out from under her silk sheets, and padded toward the door, gently pulling it ajar. There was no-one down the hallway.

With a smile, she quickly tip-toed to the stairs, the dimly-lit wall lamps guiding her path to the bottom.

She reached the kitchen door, and was about to open it when a loud screech made her jump. She turned and looked up.

A camera stared back at her.

“Aziza!” said a woman’s voice from a nearby speaker. “Get back to bed, you silly child!”

“Yes, your majesty,” Aziza mumbled.

Check back tomorrow for “R”…

“Queenie Eye” is a track on Paul’s 2013 album, “New.” The song was also released as a single that same year.

  1. Hi Colin; thanks for embedding this clip – I hadn’t watched it before, so had never realised Johnny Depp was in it! I must admit, I prefer him in this to the more recent clip we’ve seen of him, here in Australia 😀
    Lovely writing, as always!

Thanks, Kae! There are a couple of other notable celebs in that video too (e.g., Jeremy Irons, Jude Law, Meryl Streep, Kate Moss). I wonder who was more excited–Paul to be working with them, or them to be in a McCartney video? 🙂

  2. I wondered what you would have for Q. Is that not a testament to a great song writer that you are able to find 26 songs, 1 for each letter of the alphabet, from one artist to base your lovely 100 word stories on. I was wondering. I lurk around your blog a lot. You have a wonderful, long and detailed knowledge of Dr. Who, but you also seem to know a great deal about music. Do you write music yourself? With your talent for short fiction, I bet you would be wonderful at it.

Well… 25 songs. There was ONE letter that Macca hasn’t written for. Yet. But I found a way around it. Wait and see… 😉

That’s very kind of you to say, Elise. 🙂 I have written music in the past. At school, my friend Nick and I had aspirations to be The Next Big Thing, and we wrote songs. Some of them weren’t that bad (though most of them really were that bad), and I even remember some of them. But since I reconciled with the fact that I’m not going to make a living as a songwriter/composer, it’s not something I spend a lot of time with these days. However, that experience does help me understand the songwriting process, which in turn informs my Music Monday comments. That creative urge is hard to suppress completely, though. Whenever I play piano for church, I tend to improvise. A lot. 🙂

  3. Like the story, love the music. Brilliant.

    Colin,

Oh, dear. I probably need that though the acid reflux has about the same effect these days. I am honestly in awe of what you’ve been doing. Not only are the stories great, but tying them to these songs is remarkable. Thank you so much. It’s been a fun journey.

Ha! Thank you, Julie. Coming from a talented writer such as yourself, that means a lot. 🙂 Our dear friend Janet would say some of these are “not quite a story”–but my blog, my rules. 😉

  5. Celia Reaves says:

Well, sure, “not quite a story,” but a gem nonetheless. I was lured astray by Aziza opening her eyes in the first line into thinking SHE was the queen, so it was a nice twist at the end to learn otherwise.

  6. If the moral of this story is that the Queen sees all, I think we know how true that is. Try slipping the wrong word by her peering eyes, and you’ll understand the wrath of a fin slap. Painful. Aziza is only going through boot camp here — she has no idea about the real war that awaits.

Hmmm… you think this might be a subconscious metaphor for Janet, drawn from my Carkoonian exile experiences? I didn’t think about that… Veeeery interesting… 🙂

I love flash fiction. I laughed when she was caught sneaking out.

    Thanks for visiting.
