Links and Stuff
It’s official! We’ve closed on our house, so it’s now ours. At last I feel comfortable to share a couple of pictures. Here’s the front of the house:
And here’s the side of the house, but you can just see the Spanish Inquisition around the corner… just kidding. This is the room that will be my study:
See the square archway? That’s going to become solid wall, starting today. I’m not doing it, since my skill with a hammer is non-existent. You know those commercials that run around this time of year showing “The Perfect Gift for Dad”–and it’s a toolkit? Sorry, I’m not that Dad. So I’m getting help with the wall. (Not from Mexico.) And once the wall is up, I’m going to have big bookcases running almost the whole length of it. It’ll be wonderful. My desk will go against that wall you see on the left. I’ll share “after” pictures when it’s all done. Of course, I’m going to paint the walls too. I got some color choices:
I’ll probably go with the one that’s second from bottom on the left-hand strip. I forget the name of the color. It’s hard to tell from the picture, but the wall is currently a beige-y color.
We’re hoping to be moved in a week from tomorrow, so we’re going to be busy for the next few days. As exciting as it is, we’ll be glad when it’s all over.
I just have a couple of links to share with you this week. The first is last month’s announcement that Dan Brown will be releasing a new novel next year. According to the announcement, the book will be called ORIGIN, and it explores “the dangerous intersection of humankindโs two most enduring questions, and the earth-shaking discovery that will answer them.” Since Dan Brown seems to have made it his life’s goal to annoy historians and Christians, one can only surmise that he’s delving into the area of Creation vs. Evolution. And if Brown’s super-sleuth cryptologist and conspiraciologst Robert Langdon’s track record is anything to go by, he’ll either be proving that “the Church” made up the Creation story to stir up animosity against snakes, or he’ll be proving scientists made up Evolution to make a monkey’s uncle out of us all. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to avoid this one, just as I’ve managed to avoid all his other novels.
Finally, this article in the New York Times announced that the latest edition of the New Oxford Shakespeare will, for the first time, credit playwright Christopher Marlowe as co-author of three Shakespeare plays, namely Henry VI parts 1, 2, and 3. Shakespearean scholars and enthusiasts have debated the attribution of Shakespeare’s plays for centuries. The majority opinion still seems to be that William Shakespeare wrote all the plays he is traditionally thought to have written. However, it seems the naysayers are making inroads, which is why this edition of Shakespeare’s work is significant. It represents the first time a scholarly edition of Shakespeare has acknowledged doubt over the authorship of any of his plays. Of course, this is just one edition of Shakespeare, and doesn’t represent the views of all scholars. But it is a feather in Marlowe’s cap, to say the least. (By the way, Christopher Marlowe is an Elizabethan private detective in Phillip DePoy’s novel, A PRISONER IN MALTA–check it out!)
Have you any exciting news to share this week?
Colin, the house looks lovely, but I’m totally green with envy about your library wall!
I’ve read quite a few of the Dan Brown novels but I don’t look for any deep meaning in them. I just read them as action books and everything else as some level of make-believe (which they are). But for a fun, quick read they’re perfect. I’ll probably read his next one and I’m not fussed about which side of the evolution-creation fence he falls onto.
Thanks, AJ–I hope it all turns out at least as well as I hope. There will be pictures, I promise!
I totally get that people can read and enjoy Dan Brown’s books without a moment’s thought that he has any clue about real history, especially church history. Unfortunately, as a student of church history, I couldn’t do it. Knowing that, a) Brown does *for real* have a chip on his shoulder against the Catholic Church, and b) that he tars all Christians, Catholic or otherwise, with the same brush, and c) I’ve actually done a number of years of academic study in church history, and know the reality behind what he passes for fact, would make it very hard for me to enter into the fiction–or at least the fiction that actually supposed to be fiction. To be fair, Dan Brown isn’t alone. I have a much lower threshold of tolerance for novels based on church history or the Bible. One of the reasons I have a lot of time for Gary Corby and Ruth Downie is they really do their historical homework, and make a decent effort to get their history right even given the factual flexibility of a novel.
Ah, yes. Completely understand your pov. I know nothing of Dan Brown other than he’s the author, so his personal agenda doesn’t play a part in my reading of the books. With his books I can gloss over the stuff he gets wrong because it isn’t something I’ve studied like you have (but I don’t accept what he says is fact either because it’s so farfetched – I’ve always assumed he’s taken an idea and then created everything around that).
But I get what you mean. When I read incorrect representations of things I know very well, I get frustrated too.
Well, congratulations on the house!
Very interesting news about Shakespeare’s “co-author.”
Thanks, Silver Fox! ๐ Marlowe’s name has been thrown around for so long as the “real” author of Shakespeare’s work, it was inevitable the idea would gain “official” traction somewhere, I suppose. After all, it’s been a viable idea for years, so I guess there must be smoke behind that fire.
Congratulations!!! I’m jealous, I want an Inquisition Room! It looks lovely. Well worth the wait and effort. Best of luck with the move.
Thank you, Micki! Hopefully I won’t need to use my study as an Inquisition Room… depends on how well the kids behave, I suppose… ๐
I HATE moving. But that house looks wonderful. Altho I’m already tired contemplating all the walking up and down stairs………….
Congrats!
Thanks, Dena. Our bedroom and my study are all on the ground floor, so hopefully we won’t have much need to go upstairs. The kids can look after their own rooms, right…? ๐
Ha! If your kids are anything like mine – good luck with that! But having all of YOUR rooms on the lower level is definitely a big plus.
Those blues are really nice; good for the creative juices! It’s a lovely home y’all have found, and your neighbors will be most fortunate to welcome you. Huzzah!
You make me want to paint my office. Though, to be fair, looking at it makes me want to paint my office. Likewise with my guest room and the dining room. And the foyer/stairwell/upstairs hall. Hey, and that basement that still hasn’t been jackhammered to pieces and put back together again. And the exterior. And my doors.
Just not the fur kids.
Thanks, Diane! We’re focusing on the priority painting projects at the moment, which are the rooms that will receive large furniture. Obviously, it’s easier to paint those before they have stuff in them. We still have other paint projects that we’ll work on over the next few weeks, one of which is the upstairs landing. I’m not sure how we’ll do the wall above the stairs, especially getting a paintbrush up to do the trim along the ceiling. Any tips? ๐
I’m searching for non-political, friendly posts and voila! Here’s one right here! I’m sorry – the Who Reviews aren’t my thing. Lovely, lovely, lovely home Colin. The exterior is so inviting, and the inside (at least what you’ve shown) is lovely too. The house looks brand new, so it’s evident the previous owners took care of it.
I love your idea of a wall filled with books. I keep looking at a wall in my own office, and I want the hubster to build me a bookcase. Matter of fact, he could build it, and then carry it right on around the room…and I’d be a one happy, happy writer!
Congratulations again! Can’t wait to see your post-painting pics!
That’s okay, Donna–while I’d like to think there’s a Doctor Who story for everyone, I know not everyone cares as much as me. To each their own. ๐
I’ve gone a few weeks without a new Links and Stuff because I’m trying to whip this room into shape. I have some shelves up but I need more. Still lots of boxes on the floor. But I’m getting there. I’m hoping to make good progress this weekend, so I can get back to life (writing, studying, etc.).
There will be pics when it’s done, have no fear! ๐
