Under My Umbrella
Here we are… no, here U are! We’ve arrived at the letter U on the A-to-Z Blogging Challenge. I’m writing 100-word flash fiction every day for the month, and U are providing my prompts each day. Thank U so much!! Yesterday’s comments yielded yet another bumper crop of imagination-stirring ideas. Unfortunately, I can only pick one (at least for today… I may dip into this pool for future flash stories). And the one I chose was from Jane Burgess. When I saw the phrase, my first thought was the song “Bus Stop” by The Hollies* (“Bus stop, wet day, she’s there, I say, “Please share my umbrella.” Bus stop, bus goes, she stays, love grows under my umbrella…”). This suggests a love story. Is that where I take it? Let’s see…
UNDER MY UMBRELLA
“Thank you! You don’t mind sharing?”
“Not in the slightest. You have far to go?”
“Just the end of the street. I hate this rain.”
“It’s Seattle. You get used to it. The name’s Thomas.”
“Jerry. I’d shake your hand but… full hands.”
“Consider us met. Shopping?”
“Work.”
“Taking work home? That’s dedication.”
“It’s important, as I’m sure you appreciate.”
“I take work home too, sometimes.”
“Here we are. Thanks, Thomas. Mind holding my bag while I get the door?”
“Of course, Jerry.”
“Hello? Bugs? The mouse is in the house. I have the shopping. Will be in touch later.”
We have some tricky letters coming up at the tale end of the alphabet. What should be the theme of tomorrow’s V story? Suggestions in the comments, please! 🙂
* Side note: The song “Bus Stop” was written by a young Graham Gouldman who went on to become one of the founding members of the group 10cc.
Romance? You have a strange mind Mr Smith😂. I love it. Fabulous.
Please hurry up and finish! I was awake at 4am this morning trying to think of subjects for the letter v! I’m becoming obsessed! Help!
Vicious circle
Vice-president
Virtuous Victor
Vicious Victoria
Violent video game
Vice squad
Village idiot
Visiting card
Yeah… not romance at all! I tried to think of other reasons people might share an umbrella, and my strange mind went all Ian Fleming and John le Carré. If you didn’t pick up on it, Thomas and Jerry are spies trading information. The challenge I set for myself with this one was to use only dialog to tell the story. I don’t know if I pulled it off, but I had fun trying. 🙂
Not long to go now. You can sleep again next Monday… 😉
Yeah, I don’t think of you as a romance writer =)
My #1 son lives in Seattle. He loves the rain.
V is for Vote for me! Value added. Victim of circumstance. Voila! Vapid Veronica. Veterans Day [that’s my V topic lol]. Vortex of doom. Vulcan. And Very impressed that you crank out the flash fiction so quickly.

I have written some romantic-y scenes in the past (one of them made my wife cry, which is always a good sign), but none of them have been published. Mostly because they’re part of stories that aren’t quite up to scratch… yet. Maybe one day.
I’ve never been to Seattle, but its reputation precedes it. I could have used somewhere in England, but that’s so cliched.
Thanks for the suggestions, Dena! 🙂
love story? I don’t think so. it’s more like a crime or something worst.
suggestions:
vale of tears
village of silence and rain
have a lovely day.
You’re on the right lines, lissa… sort of! See my reply to Jane.
Thanks for the prompt ideas. Good ones!
I love that song.
It’s one of my favorite Hollies songs. A talented chap that Mr. Gouldman.
Tee hee. Excellent work.
